Clan List of 2002
ABOUT MY CODE: I am not a genealogist and I needed a way to specifically identify the different Johns and Jacobs and Catherines etc, so I invented a number system. It starts with the children of the immigrant family. They are numbered 01, 02, 03. Their children are therefore 0101, 0201, 0301 and so on. The numbers get long but it is very fast and accurate. I have also added colored blocks to help you search through the list. I might add links to militia lists, pensions, wills and other stories in the future.
This is the original family that was part of the Palatine Immigration to New York in 1710 and settled in the Mohawk Valley. Johannes Christmann was a Vinedresser and Husbandman in Dalsheim of the Rhein/Palatinate.

Frederick is the first Christman to be born on American soil. He went to Pennsylvania with his parents before returning to Herkimer with them in 1728. In September of 1778, Frederick was captured according to the "Public Papers of George Clinton". He was taken to Canada and nothing is known of him again. He was 67 years old when taken captive. CHRISTMAN, Nicholas, Herkimer, is probably the oldest resident of Herkimer county He was born September 1, 1803. He was a carpenter and joiner and afterwards a farmer, which he has been for fifty-six years. He owns sixty acres of land and thirteen milch cows, and does dairy farming. He has been commissioner of highways. In 1829 he married Hannah Woliver, and they have eight children living, five of whom are married and three are yet home. Mr. Christman\rquote s greatest pride is that his family has always been most agreeable and congenial. His grandfather, John Christman, took an active part in the Revoluntionary War, and was in the burning of the old mill in Little Falls, by the Indians and Tories.\par }

01050405 Lewis Christman (b.1815) The varient spelling of Christman is Cristman in this family. That spelling goes way back to the records of the old Herkimer Church where Hans Nicholas inherited Nicholas Fellers church seat. Hans Nicholas' surname is spelled Cristman in those records. Perhaps the religionists there felt that the name Christman was some sort of blasphamy against Christ. There had been religious bickering between Lutherans & Reformed since the Palatines arrived in New York City in 1710. In Stone Arabia the bickering was particularly intense.

Possibly as Follows:
John Christman Last Sun. afternoon, occurred the death of John Christman at the advanced age of 84 years. He was born in Tonawanda, N.Y. June 20, 1807 and resided in his native place until the fall of 1836, when he bought 160 acres of land in Williams Co., Ohio. In Feb. 1839, he came to Washtenaw Co., Mich. where he prosecuted his trade of builder, which he had learned in early life in his native State. He pursued that business a number of yrs., and at length bought 135 acres in Saline Township in Washtenaw Co., where he resided 28 1/2 years. He then sold out and bought 90 acres in the same twp, which he retained for 1 year. His health failed, and he sold the farm removing into the village of Saline. In the fall of 1865, he came to Gratiot county and bought 80 acres of land on Sec. 25, Pine River twp., on which he made considerable improvement. In 1866 he bought some lots at St. Louis, near where he lately, resided, and the following year built his residence. Re engaged in the grocery trade. About 6 years ago, his wife died, and he has lead a retired and quiet life since, devoting most of his time around his home. He was of late years a great reader, as the following will show: A card found tied around an old Bible, in Mr. Christman's handwriting states that he commenced reading it Jan. 7, 1878, and that he had read it through 76 times. Another Bible was found which he says he had read 36 times, besides several thousand other books, all since 1878, and without the aid of glasses.

In 1860, Abram Christman came west to live on a farm in the town of Clinton, where he died in 1879. Their son, Harmon grew up at Oriskany, NY. About 1852, he came to Turtle, "prospecting;" and finally he bought from Mrs. Erckenbrach the present Chrisstman farm on the Shopiere Road. In February 1859, Mr. and Mrs. Christman came to their house on 135 acres in Section 8 of Turtle. Jane Milner, sister of Mrs. Christman, married James Raymond, and her brothers, William and John, also came here. William lived on the Mack homestead and John Milner and William Andre had the Florey homestead. The children of Harmon and Ann (Milner) Christman were Farmer, Alta, and Harrison. The following excerpt is from an E-mail I sent to Sue Christman Smith on July 4, 2000:
How many patriotic Americans saluting the flag today know that the very first time the flag was flown in combat was at Fort Stanwix during the siege that caused the Battle of Oriskany? - Not many... 0304 Nicholas was in Fort Stanwix at the time. He may have helped make the flag. It was hastily thrown together from captured British & Tory uniforms to taunt them while the Oriskany dead rotted on the field of battle. Just few stray bullets... and I would have no list of Christmans.
...Nicholas later married his Palatine/Ephratah cousin 0207 Mary. He was stationed at Fort Paris in Stone Arabia and probably visited his grandfather 02 Jacob & uncle 0203 Jacob Jr. on the Stone Arabia lot 93 homestead where Mary lived. It was very close. Nicholas was waiting to go on the Sullivan Campaign which destroyed the Iroquois Longhouse. The campaign caused most of the Indians to flee to Canada in 1779. Nevertheless, when Nicholas & Mary looked into each other's eyes, a thought became a consideration that developed in to an attitude. Pretty soon they took action on their attitude and the action became a habit - that rhymes with rabbit, and they had eleven children according to my list.

Mary is buried in Lasselsville
The sponsors for Nicholas & Mary's children baptisms all lived in the Palatine/Ephratah area. Check out Mary's page for some more details about this family.

04 Elizabeth Christmannin
(b. 1700 in Germany if she is the oldest daughter) Elizabeth is either the oldest daughter or a sister of Johannes. Henry Z Jones says that she was living with Hauser by 1711 and that it was probably her second marriage. That would make her too old to be a daughter born in 1710. Nevertheless, she is a part of the family because of the other links to the Christmanns shown below.
